(SACRAMENTO, CA, 9/11/18) - The Sacramento Valley office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-SV) today condemned xenophobic comments by the mayor of Dixon, Calif., in the aftermath of an offensive op-ed penned by the city's vice mayor. A column written over the summer by Dixon Vice Mayor Ted Hickman led to a firestorm of protest in the community over the column's derogatory comments about LGBTQ individuals. It was published in the Independent Voice newspaper on June 29. Amid the outcry, Dixon Mayor Thom Bogue reportedly refused to hang a sign of tolerance at City Hall. The sign reads: "We Welcome All Races, Religions, Countries of Origin, Sexual Orientations, Genders. You Are Safe Here. We Stand With You!" Bogue told the San Francisco Chronicle: "I don't welcome hateful people. I don't welcome pedophiles, active criminals. I don't welcome those practicing Shariah (Islamic) law. ... They have the right to kill their wives, kill their children." In a statement, CAIR-SV's Executive Director Basim Elkarra said: "We condemn Mayor Bogue's bigotry and urge public officials and community leaders to repudiate all forms of racism, Islamophobia, intolerance or discrimination. Mayor Bogue owes our community a public apology." CAIR California (CAIR-CA) found that there was a marked rise in anti-Muslim bias incidents in California in 2017, as detailed in the new CAIR-CA Civil Rights Report. CAIR-CA recorded an 8 percent increase in anti-Muslim bias incidents in 2017 compared to 2016. Elkarra urged community members to report any bias incidents to police and to CAIR-SV's Civil Rights Department at 916-441-6269 or by filing a report at http://bit.ly/cairsvreport. CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims. La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos. - END - CONTACT: CAIR-SV Communications Manager Kalin Kipling, 916-441-6269, kkipling@cair.com
