CAIR-MI to File EEOC Complaint for Muslim ExpressJet Flight Attendant Suspended for Refusing to Serve Alcohol (FARMINGTON HILLS, MI, 8/31/2015) -- On Tuesday, September 1, the Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI) will hold a news conference in Farmington Hills, Mich., to announce the filing of an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) complaint against ExpressJet Airlines for the revocation of a reasonable religious accommodation of a Muslim flight attendant. WHAT: Press Conference to Announce EEOC Complaint against ExpressJet for Revocation of Reasonable Religious Accommodation of Muslim Flight Attendant WHERE: CAIR Michigan, 30201 Orchard Lake Road, Suite 260, Farmington Hills, MI WHEN: Tuesday, September 1, 10 a.m. CONTACT: CAIR-MI Staff Attorney Lena Masri, 248-390-9784, E-Mail: lmasri@cair.com; CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid, 248-842-1418, E-Mail: dwalid@cair.com Based upon her sincerely-held religious belief that prohibits her from serving alcohol, Ms. Charee Stanley was directed by the company to work out an arrangement with the other flight attendant on duty to accommodate passenger requests for alcohol. Ms. Stanley has followed this arrangement without incident. On August 25, 2015, ExpressJet Airlines revoked its religious accommodation and placed Ms. Stanley on administrative leave for 12 months, after which her employment may be administratively terminated. The Council on American-Islamic Relations, Ohio (CAIR-OH) is co-counsel. CAIR-MI and CAIR-OH believe that ExpressJet Airlines revoked Ms. Stanley’s religious accommodation request based upon an Islamophobic complaint filed by a fellow airline employee that referenced her Islamic head scarf. “We have informed ExpressJet of its obligation under the law to reasonably accommodate Ms. Stanley’s religious accommodation request regarding service of alcohol,” said CAIR-MI Staff Attorney Lena Masri. “Instead, ExpressJet has deliberately chosen to violate Ms. Stanley’s constitutional rights.” CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
