Almost 50 Minnesota Muslim organizations sign on to a statement highlighting the concerns over the new Countering Violent Extremism Pilot program http://files.ctctcdn.com/…/d068ad69-9... (MINNEAPOLIS, MN, 5/1/15) - Today, the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN) announced the growing list of nearly 50 Minnesota Muslim Organizations that signed on to a statement highlighting the concerns over the Department of Justice's (DOJ) Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) Pilot program in Minnesota. Minnesota Somali and Muslim organizations join the United States Council of Muslim Organizations (USCMO), and Muslim leaders in Boston and Los Angeles, the two other pilot cities, in opposing the DOJ CVE program. We join civil rights groups, including the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Muslim Advocates, American Civil Liberties Union, Brennan Center for Justice, National Lawyers Guild and others in raising civil rights concerns inherent in the DOJ CVE program. "Minnesota Muslim organizations and its leaders recognize the recurring issue of recruitment of some of our youth by terrorist organizations, yet, we believe our community is making great strides in addressing this pressing issue" said CAIR-MN Executive Director Jaylani Hussein. While we are united with the government in our desire to protect our nation's security and liberties, we are not convinced that the current law enforcement CVE program is the most effective way to work with the Minnesota Muslim/Somali community. Many of the Minnesota Muslim organizations are concerned that countering violent extremism programs that only focus on Muslim communities ignore the real threat of extremists in other communities while increasing negative public sentiment toward American Muslims as a whole. CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization.
