LOMITA, Calif. (KTLA) -- A civil rights organization has brought a federal lawsuit against the city of Lomita for rejecting an application to renovate a mosque complex. The Council on American-Islamic Relations contends the city discriminated against members of the Islamic Center of South Bay when it denied the building permit request. The Lomita City Council voted down the plan for a worship center in March, 2010. The project would have consolidated eight buildings into one two-story structure. Council members cited neighbors' concerns about increased traffic in the neighborhood. Today's complaint says the city conducted a study that found the project would actually improve parking and the flow of traffic. The permit decision can be overturned if the city is found guilty of discrimination.
